As a scholar in the fields of philosophy, history and
comparative
religions
and a mystic deeply rooted in Cosmic Consciousness,
Lawrence McCafferty spans two worlds: a clear intelligence
that has penetrated the heart of spiritual traditions East and
West and a fully realized Truth that awakens.
Lawrence McCafferty was born into a distinguished Manhattan
family,
giving him a rich background in music and the arts. He first experienced the fundamental unity of existence at the age of 14, sometimes referred to as Cosmic Consciousness, and for the rest of his life this living presence of Reality continued to clarify, expand and transform his own nature and understanding.
He studied religion at Harvard and received his Ph. D. in history at the University of Southern California. He was deeply influenced by his studies with a Taoist and Buddhist scholar as well as his close
friendship with Maria and Aldous Huxley and Gerald Heard. Alan Watts wrote the foreword to his first book, River of Light, published by Philosophical Library.
His profound study of the world’s spiritual traditions, both conventional and esoteric, was shared during his years as an instructor of philosophy and comparative religion at several colleges and universities in Southern California. He was a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and a member of SIECC
(Societe´Internationale pour les Etudes Comparatives des Cilvilisations).
He later left the academic world in order to better focus on helping people with their spiritual growth, and in the last eight years of his life he transmitted the Teaching, as he called it, to students in a series of public talks and seminars.
He likened man’s search for spiritual consciousness as a quest for what is inside him but temporarily
obscured. “Man has forgotten. Somehow he has to remember. Someone must awaken him. My function is to awaken, to teach and to remind. Whatever I have claimed for myself, I claim as a possibility for everyone.”
